The experts noted that cells within their normal colon cells samples stayed methylated at around the 80 % level for large blocks of the epigenome. In comparison, cells from colon tumors comprising those same large blocks experienced no such stability and were much more variable in terms of methylation amounts. Feinberg says the results could imply that current efforts to simply recognize methylation markers as indicators of cancers or targets of cancer therapy may be misleading or worse, won’t get the job done at all.
